Lots of News About the Climate – How Does It Relate to Solar Power?

Buy Solar LeadsIf you are a seller of solar installation services or solar energy products, you are likely very interested in the state of renewable energy, particularly solar power, over the rest of 2019. With half the country warning of a climate crisis that could lead to imminent disaster, and the current U.S. administration downplaying the effects of human-created climate change, it’s hard to know where solar power actually stands.

Fortunately, there are a number of signs that renewable energy, and solar power in particular, is on the rise in 2019 and moving forward, especially on the west coast. Some strong evidence for this includes the following items, sourced directly from current headlines.

Millions of Dollars in Funding for Tribal Energy Products

This July, the Department of Energy announced that they will be providing over 16 million dollars in funding for more than a dozen tribal energy infrastructure projects. There will be an additional 23 million dollars’ worth of projects whose cost will be shared between the Department and the tribes.

Nine of the projects are new solar installations, with the rest involving the addition of new energy-efficient technologies like battery storage and microgrids.

Microsoft Data Centers in Arizona Powered by First Solar

Also, in July, Microsoft announced that their new data centers in Goodyear and El Mirage will be powered by First Solar’s 150MW Sun Streams 2 PV project. First Solar’s technology has a carbon footprint as much as six times lower than traditional crystalline silicone PV panels.

These new data centers are set to become operational in 2021, and are projected to offset an amount of CO2 each year that is equivalent to removing 37,000 cars from the road.

Renewable Energy Sources on the Rise, According to the EIA

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, renewable energy sources represented over 20 percent of net domestic electrical generation in the first half of 2019. This included biomass, geothermal, wind power, hydropower and solar power systems, which increased by close to 11 percent over the same period last year and represented 2.6 percent of total net electrical generation.

This put renewable energy sources ahead of everything but natural gas among power-generating sources, well ahead of nuclear power, coal, and even oil.

California Farms Becoming Solar Farms

California farms have been hit hard by the passage of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, which may force California famers to take over half a million acres of farmland out of production. To make up for the lost revenue, many farms are thinking about turning that land into solar farms, laying out huge solar panels to collect the sun’s energy for use across the state.

This shift can serve two important purposes. First, it will allow farmers to keep that land productive even without the water necessary to grow crops on it. Further, it will also allow California to build up its renewable energy reserves without destroying the flora and fauna on existing land, just to make room for solar farms. At least 13,000 acres of solar farms have already been already built in California’s San Joaquin valley alone.

Solar ITC Extension Bills Proposed

In a great piece of news for those in the solar energy industry, a bipartisan team of lawmakers in Congress has introduced legislation to extend the solar Investment Tax Credit for five years, retaining its current 30 percent value.

Of course, the bill would have to pass a vote in the House and Senate and not be vetoed by the President, but the fact that both Republicans and Democrats were able to come together on this issue should be viewed as an encouraging sign for the future of solar. When viewing these headlines in their aggregate, the future of solar looks bright indeed.
