Addressing Residential Solar Clients' Cold Weather Worries About Solar Panels

Buy Solar LeadsFor some solar customers, the first winter after having their solar panels installed can be filled with questions. After all, now that summer’s long, sunny days have come to an end, many might not be sure about what to expect from their solar systems or have an idea about how to care for them through the winter months.

But the best solar sales professionals know that the more information they share with their clients, the happier and more satisfied they will be. And for those who live in the colder and snowier parts of the country, having the information they need to take care of their solar panels during winter is something that every installer should provide regardless of when the system is being installed.

If you’re new to solar sales or want to make sure that you’re providing your clients with the most valuable service possible, then here’s what to tell your residential solar clients about winter solar panel care.

#1: Calm Your Clients’ Fears

The first thing you should do is calm your clients’ fears about their solar panels not working in winter. Solar panels work just as well in winter as they do in summer because even on cloudy days, a good amount of the sun’s UV rays still reach their solar panels. And while the days may not be as long, the cooler temperatures will allow the panels to work more efficiently than they do during the dog days of summer.

#2: Keeping the Solar Panels Clean During Winter

The one thing that can get in the way of solar panels working as efficiently as possible in the winter is if large amounts of snow and ice pile up on the surface of the panels. Depending on where the panels are located, and if it is safe enough, your client can use a soft bristled snow brush to brush away the snow. It is important to remind them to avoid using anything rougher than a soft brush because they could wind up scratching or damaging the solar panels.

In some cases, however; the solar panels may even clean themselves. For example, the surface of the solar panels produces enough heat that a dusting of snow will easily melt away not long after the sun rises. A side benefit of this is that as the snow melts away, it takes a lot of the surface dirt with it, thus cleaning the panels.

Of course, if there is a lot of snow on the panels and they are too hard for your client to reach, then you should let them know that they can always call your team to clean their panels for them (if you provide this service).

#3: Adjusting the Angle of the Panels

In the winter, the angle of the sun changes. Since the sun is lower in the sky in the winter, if your client wants their system to perform optimally, then the angle of their solar panels should be adjusted. A simple equation for determining the optimal angle is to add 15 degrees to the degree of latitude from their location. Of course, this is only an option if your client’s solar panels are mounted on adjustable racks. If the racks are fixed, then the angle can’t be changed.

#4: Caring for Solar Batteries in Winter

While keeping too much snow and ice from building up on the solar panels is the main objective on the outside of the home, on the inside the top concern is caring for the battery bank because sub-freezing temperatures can impact their operation. Before installing the battery bank, you should consider the battery type that your client is interested in using because each battery has a unique minimum and maximum temperature range. Some types are better suited to working in cold environments than others. You may also want to have your client consider having a thermometer installed on the battery itself.

In very cold climates, you should advise your solar clients to insulate their batteries during the winter. And if for whatever reason they choose not to use their battery storage for some time, then they should keep them stored in a dry space that ideally doesn’t freeze. They should also connect their battery bank to a trickle charger over the winter to make sure their energy reserves don’t get depleted.
