Let’s take a look at how solar installers can use Google’s Hangouts marketing as an effective lead-closing tool, and why it’s one of the best webinar and video conferencing apps available in today’s crowded market.

By now, you’re probably familiar with Google Hangouts. The search giant’s free video service is a wonderful way to keep in touch with friends and family, but many have not tapped into its use for business.

Google Hangouts Are Easy on the Wallet

As a small solar installer, it’s important to carefully weigh the costs and benefits of your marketing investments. In all likelihood, this is something that you already do. Your marketing decisions probably follow these rules:

  • Unlike your larger competitors, you can’t afford to throw money into marketing efforts, without seeing results

  • Your marketing strategy is all about maximizing your return on investment.

  • You tend to avoid investing in traditional media marketing such as print, radio, and television.

  • You generally opt for more affordable and measurable marketing strategies, such as social media marketing, paid search, and search engine optimization.

  • You resist the urge to purchase shared leads that will put your business into direct competition with its biggest, most aggressive competitors.

  • You invest instead in exclusive leads, which put your small business’s quality and service in the spotlight.

So how does Google Hangouts stack up in the ROI department? To start, it’s free. You can host as many webinars, video conferences, and sales meetings on Google Hangouts as you’d like, and it won’t cost your business a dime.

Compared to so many other webinar hosting services, Google Hangouts is the obvious choice. Some of the competitors might offer additional features that are nice, but Google Hangouts has everything you need to close solar leads, and it’s free.

No Software to Download

Certain webinar and video conferencing programs require all participants to download and install special software onto their computers in order to take part in video chats, seminars, or videoconferences. As anyone versed in the world of sales knows, that’s far from ideal.

Imagine yourself as one of your solar prospects: you’re interested, but you’re still on the fence about whether going solar is the right choice for you and your family or business.

You wouldn’t mind getting some more information so you can make an informed decision, and you’ve been invited to an online solar seminar and Q&A session with your friendly local solar installer. So you schedule time out of your busy day to sit down at your computer and participate. You open the email, click the link, and… wait a minute, what’s this? You have to install a program you’ve never used before from a vendor you’ve never heard of?

While some tech-savvy individuals might install the application, far more potential customers will throw in the towel.  If you’re a technophobe or you’re pressed for time, you’re unlikely to make the leap of faith that installing this unfamiliar video conferencing application requires. What if it’s a scam or a virus? What if it takes too long to download? Better safe than sorry.

Google Hangouts is a great way for you to interact with all of your solar business’s prospects, because it doesn’t require installation of any extra software.

Hangouts On Air

While participation in a Google Hangout used to require a Google account, a newer service called Hangouts On Air allows anyone to join a Google hangout, without having to join Google first.

As the host of the Hangout On Air, you’ll need to have a Google account, you’ll need to set up a Google+ profile, and you’ll have verify your YouTube account. If it’s your first time hosting a Hangout On Air, leave a few minutes before the start of the chat and have your mobile phone handy for account verification. Beyond that, the service is easy to use.

So what makes Hangouts On Air so great for closing solar leads? As mentioned, any of your prospects can participate in them. Those without Google accounts cannot RSVP or be active participants in the conversation, but they’re free to observe. Chances are excellent that all of their questions will be answered during the course of the webinar, bringing definite value to the experience.

An Unlimited Audience

Regular Google Hangouts are limited to ten people, but Hangouts On Air can be streamed live to your website or Google+ page, giving you the ability to broadcast the wonders of solar to an unlimited number of prospects. Google hangouts marketing is not only free but it connects you with a wider audience that you might not otherwise have access to. You can use this feature to increase traffic to your website or Google+ page, and drive huge numbers of prospects right into your sales funnel, without hard selling or high-pressure sales tactics.

Create An Event From Your Google+ Page

Unless you’re trying to create a Google Hangout exclusively for your best customers, Create an Event and invite as many industry people as you can.

  • All of your new prospects

  • The members of your mailing list

  • Your previous clients

  • Old prospects that you might consider to be cold leads

You never know which leads will turn into sales, and there’s no extra cost for inviting more guests. Take advantage of the broad reach that this free service offers.

You’re Not Just Chatting. You’re Creating Content

The obvious purpose of hosting a Google Hangout for your solar leads is to answer their questions, overcome their objections, and convert them into paying customers. But if you’re not using your Google Hangouts as opportunities to create valuable content, then you’re missing out.

Record your Google Hangouts. You can edit them once you’re done, so feel free to chop them up into bite-sized bits that future prospects will find engaging and useful. Then, repurpose them as content for your website, YouTube channel, or your latest social media marketing campaign.

Prospective clients want to know that they’re dealing with an expert. What could be more persuasive than a video of you showing off your expertise by fielding questions from people just like them?

Sweeten the Deal With A Google Hangouts “Special Offer”

Yes, your webinars allow your clients and prospects to take advantage of your expertise. But why not give them a little extra something for taking time out of their schedules to engage with you? Try offering special incentives to those who participate in your next Google Hangout. Chances are, you’ll see participation and sales increase, and your clients and prospects will feel more appreciated.
