What the U.S. Solar Revolution Means for the Solar Installer

According to multiple sources, 2018 may just end up being the year of the solar panel here in the United States. So far this year, the country has added more solar power to the grid than any other type of power. That’s quite amazing, and something that advocates for solar and other forms of sustainable energy production should be commended for having a hand in.

While adding more solar than any other source of power so far this year is something worth celebrating, let’s not break our collective arms patting ourselves on the back just yet.

Despite the importance of this watershed moment and the variety of developments that have lead to it, solar currently makes up roughly one half of one percent of all the energy consumed in the U.S. That said, solar is growing, and dramatically. This growth is a win for the planet and for consumers, but it may present some challenges for solar installers, thanks to a couple of things that are driving the growth in overall solar.

The Arrival of Big Solar and the Storage Revolution

As reported earlier this year on the RGR Blog, 2018 has witnessed a couple of other major developments in solar energy generation and capacity. Major advances in energy storage are driving the development of major utility-scale solar projects in California and elsewhere. One of the major impediments to the development of utility-scale solar has always been the challenge of what to do with excess power when the sun is shining.

Now, the answers to questions about solar plus storage are starting to become clear.

Developments in storage technology have made it possible to harvest electricity through solar farms, and to store it for when it’s needed most but not available directly from the sun—night time. These developments could mean a reduction in government incentives—such as net-metering programs and tax breaks for new home solar installation. But it’s not all bad news for the solar installer.

Solar Home Construction

As reported recently on the RGR Blog, the California Energy Commission has ruled that most new homes constructed in the state, beginning in 2020, must have solar power systems. It’s being called the California Solar Mandate, and while it will mean an $8,000-$9,000 built-in increase in the cost of a new home in the state, it will also help California reach its very ambitious sustainability goals over the decades to follow.

Smart solar installers in California (and other states that traditionally follow California’s lead on sustainability issues) are preparing for this future by developing relationships with new home contractors in their area today.

The Solar Future for the Country

It’s getting increasingly difficult for proponents of fossil fuels to ignore the fact that renewable energy must and will be our future. Many other countries worldwide are taking the lead investing in solar roads, solar farms, and other technologies that will literally guarantee a future for life as we know it in the face of the environmental effects of two centuries of fossil-fueled industry.

Solar installers that stay in front of emerging trends will benefit the most from the changing times – our future is solar, and it’s coming very quickly.
