What to Track to Understand the Solar Picture in California

It’s no great secret that California leads the nation in terms of solar power adoption, residentially speaking. California also leads the nation when it comes to tracking key markers within the solar industry for both residential and commercial markets.

The California Solar Initiative (CSI) maintains a public reporting site called California Solar Statistics (CSS) that monitors net energy metering and a wide variety of other programs, including the Multifamily Affordable Solar Housing and Single Family Affordable Solar Homes programs, as well as reported data from across the industry and grid.

The site is a joint initiative of the California Public Utilities Commission and CSI program administrators. In this post, we will dig into the site, looking for the statistics that matter most in an effort to gain as complete a snapshot as possible of the current state of the solar power market, the industry surrounding, and the production of solar power in the State of California.

California Solar Power: The Basics

Among the basic data compiled and reported by the CSS website are the number of projects executed to date within the state, the number of megawatts of power that all current projects are capable of generating, and the average cost per watt of the power.

On the date of this post’s publication, there are nearly 600,000 solar projects in the state of California capable of generating just over 4500 megawatts of power at an average cost between $4.50 and $5.25 per kilowatt.

Diving Deeper Into California’s Solar Landscape

The CSI site also reports program totals from the various initiatives it tracks within the state, as well as:

  • Geographical statistics regarding solar adoption, solar power generation, and associated costs;
  • Monthly, quarterly, and annual statistics on projects, power, and costs statewide;
  • Cost distribution and costs by system;
  • As well as application status,
  • Applications by sector,
  • Program goals, and many other metrics.

Analyzing the Data from CA and Other Uses for the Site

Downloading raw data specific to each of the programs tracked is an available feature. The site also produces graphics and other tools to make the data easier to analyze and understand from a lay perspective.

The CSI site also has a database of active solar contractors operating in the State of California, and a search tool to make it easy for homeowners, small business owners, and potential investors to find and review contractors.

The One Stop Shop for All California Solar Statistics

Thanks to the funding and initiative of the State of California, the CSI website is an excellent single stop for finding aggregate and individually reported data on the solar industry, solar power generation, and a variety of government programs designed to drive solar power adoption and generation.

Given the state’s commitment to funding and reporting solar power growth and development, it’s little wonder that California leads the nation in solar power generation.
