Better Batteries, Solar Water Purifiers, and More
Few industries are as driven by technology as the solar industry. Just as one technology enters the marketplace, it seems that others are already being lined up on the runway to take off. And in 2019, there’s a host of new technologies being readied for release. This year, each of them has the potential for turning the industry on its head.
Here’s what these new technologies will mean for the solar industry, and how your solar business can be prepared to take advantage.
Solar Roads
Last year saw the introduction of solar-powered pavement technology. The technology was tested on a sidewalk on part of America’s historic Route 66. The results of the test proved without a doubt that solar-powered pavement tech has excellent potential for being a reliable and abundant source of clean energy.
In 2019, it is expected for this technology to be installed on certain sections of Route 66 roads. The panels are also designed to feature LED lights for easier night driving, and thermal heating systems for keeping the roads free of snow and ice.
With this new technology, solar installers will be expanding into new areas of application, and solar manufacturers will be providing a wider range of products. It also opens the potential for homeowners to have their driveways equipped with solar pavement panels.
Solar Tracking Mounts
Not every home or business is ideally situated for solar. Some are in shaded areas while others may not have roofs that are aligned with the path of the sun. In 2019, this won’t be an issue anymore thanks to solar tracking mounts. They are ideal for ground-based solar array installations, so they can be installed anywhere on a property where the sun hits the most.
With trackable technology, the mounts will automatically shift and tilt the panels to follow the path of the sun. This ensures optimum solar energy production, regardless of the home’s proximity to sunshine.
These innovative mounts have been around since 2015, but they gain in popularity year after year and in 2019, they are forecasted to account for half of all solar mounts installed. In fact, Green Tech Media predicts the market to grow by 21% over last year.
Solar Thermal Fuel
If there’s one problem in the solar industry that sticks out more than any other, it’s solar storage. While incredible advances have been made in the areas of solar panels, storage still relies on batteries, which aren’t the most efficient or economically viable solution.
In 2019, new solar + storage options are finally expected to hit the marketplace, courtesy of MIT Professor Jeffrey Grossman and his team of researchers. Over the last few years, they have been working on an alternative to batteries and they seem to have found it with solar thermal fuel (STF).
These new STF storage solutions store solar power as a liquid substance. The team has even created a solid-state application capable of being installed on car roofs, windows, windshields, and other surfaces exposed to sunlight.
Solar Water Purifiers
Solar water purifiers have been around for a while, but Stanford University researchers have taken the technology to a whole new level. Their new solar water purifier is half the size of a postage stamp and it can purify water in just a few minutes by accessing any visible light. Previous water purifiers needed to use UV rays and took hours of exposure to work. This new technology is smaller, faster, and more effective, and it has the potential to make for a major impact in areas around the world with dirty drinking water.
