Teach Residential Solar Clients About Optimizing Solar Panels for Winter
Solar panels are designed to work in all climates and weather conditions, but there’s no arguing that they work best during summer’s long, sunny days. Still, even in the cold winter months, homeowners can enjoy the benefits of using clean, sustainable energy. They just need to make certain adjustments to ensure that their solar panels are optimized for winter’s shorter, cloudier, and colder days.
If you have residential solar clients who are worried that their solar panels won’t be able to provide their homes with reliable energy in the winter, then here’s how to educate them, so they can get the most out of their solar energy systems during this time of year.
Adjusting the Angle of the Solar Panels
Solar panels work best when they are aligned to the angle of the sun because this allows the panels to receive the optimum amount of sunlight. The problem is that the angle of the sun in the winter is different than it is in the summer. So, if the solar panels aren’t adjusted to the appropriate angle for the winter sun, then your client’s system won’t be generating as much energy as it otherwise could.
Since the sun is lower in the sky in winter, it is recommended for the panels to be adjusted in the winter months to an angle of the client’s latitude plus an additional 10 to 15 degrees. Since the angle will be steeper, it will not only allow the surface of the panels to absorb more sun, but it will also help snow to more easily slide off the panels.
Removing Heavy Snow From the Solar Panels
If your client lives in a part of the country where heavy snowfall is common in winter, then they will want to remove the snow from the surface of the panels as soon as possible. It is important to note that a dusting of snow won’t cause that much of a reduction in the system’s energy production. In fact, this type of snow can even be beneficial because it will quickly melt away, thus cleaning the panels of any dust or dirt particles.
But heavy snow can certainly reduce a system’s energy production and if the snow is left to accumulate, the added weight of it could put unnecessary stress on the solar array’s mounting brackets, not to mention the client’s roof.
When removing snow from solar panels, only a soft snow brush should be used as anything else could scratch or damage the surface of the panels.
Insulating the Solar Batteries
If your client’s solar system has battery storage, then the batteries should be insulated in the winter because most lose about 10% of their rated capacity for every 15 to 20 degrees the temperature drops below 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Conserving Energy in the Winter
If not having enough energy in the winter is a worry for your client, then there are steps they can take that will help them conserve the energy that their solar panels do generate. Some tips can include:
- Replacing incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient light bulbs
- Unplug small appliances when they’re not being used
- Turn off lights when leaving a room
- Turn off appliances when they’re not being used
- Turn down the thermostat a couple of degrees
- Wash clothes in the evening using the cold water setting
Improve Your Sales With Better Educated Solar Leads
Some solar leads are just more educated than others. Not educated as in college educated, but rather educated about solar energy. These types of solar leads are what are known as “hot” leads because they have already done a lot of their own research and are thus, closer to making their buying decision.
By working with hot solar leads, your sales team won’t have to work quite as hard to convert them into clients. This simple difference can amount to significant savings for your business and a much higher conversion rate.
At RGR Marketing, we specialize in providing our solar partners with exclusive access to high-quality solar leads that meet your unique target demographic. Our leads are not only educated and close to making their purchasing decision, but unlike what you get from other lead generation firms, our leads are validated and scrubbed to remove any dead leads or incomplete or duplicate contact information before you receive them.
If you want to work with better quality leads, put your trust in the lead generation firm that has more than 20 years of experience serving the solar industry. Get your leads from RGR Marketing and discover the difference our solar leads can make in your success this year.
