The Ways You Can Identify Your Target Solar Customers
For a solar installer to build a successful business one of the most important things they need to do is to identify their target customer. Having a designated target customer in mind is important because it allows you to optimize your marketing message, so you are more likely to attract the customer you’re aiming for. This not only saves time and resources, but it also makes it easier to close more sales.
Of course, if you’re new to being a solar business owner, then you may be looking for some help in this area. Here are six important things solar installers should pay attention to when identifying their target customers.
#1: Age
While a prospect’s age doesn’t automatically mean that they will be either more or less likely to buy solar, certain age groups are considered more likely to invest in renewable energy – Millennials and Generation Z. Reasons are most likely linked to these groups having a greater awareness of climate change and other environmental issues and more interest in saving money on their energy costs.
#2: Income
Many homeowners consider solar panels a luxury purchase because the cost of equipment and installation can be hefty despite costs having dropped off significantly. So, to have the best chance of making a sale, a prospect needs to have an income that is sufficient enough to either purchase their systems outright or at the very least the monthly payments if they are financing their purchase.
#3: Location
While solar can work just about anywhere, there are some locations that are better suited to it than others. For example, marketing solar to prospects who live in heavily forested areas probably wouldn’t deliver many sales compared to those who live in open areas that receive plenty of direct sunlight exposure.
#4: Political Party
Climate change has been a partisan topic for years now, and while this may be controversial, those talking points have impacted each party’s likelihood of going solar. In a recent study, 57 percent of Democrats polled said they’ve installed or given serious thought in the past year to installing solar panels at their home to generate electricity compared to just 36 percent of GOP-leaning homeowners.
#5: Household Size
According to a report published by The Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA), more than half of the solar customers surveyed (52 percent) were one or two member households that either had no children or no longer had children living at home.
#6: Education
The same SEPA report also revealed that education also plays a hand in one’s likelihood to purchase solar panels for their home, with most residential solar system owners having an undergraduate degree and over half having a post-graduate or professional degree.
