Debunk These 5 Common Solar Myths to Improve Your Bottom Line
Photovoltaic technology isn’t a new development, but it’s still a relatively recent arrival on the energy scene. It’s definitely gaining mainstream acceptance more rapidly than ever, but there are still some pervasive misconceptions about how it works.
As a solar installer looking for new customers, you’re going to encounter prospects that may have considered going solar, but have held off due to misconceptions. Be ready to authoritatively counter these objections, and you could have some brand new customers on your hands.
So, what are some of the most commonly held beliefs about solar that simply aren’t true?
Solar Panels Power Doesn’t Work Where I Live
When you see pictures of solar panels, they’re usually featured in some arid, desert landscape. True, places where cloud cover is rare do make excellent spots for solar farms, but solar panels are perfectly adept at converting ambient light into energy. In fact, too much heat can make them less efficient.
Solar is an excellent option in just about any climate, so your clients needn’t worry that their solar panels will be worthless in Seattle or Portland.
It’s Smarter to Wait for Solar Panels
Some people think that solar technology is going to keep getting cheaper, or that it’s going to dramatically improve over the next decade. While it’s true that technological advancements have made solar more efficient over the years, it’s unlikely that the solar industry will experience much in the way of disruptive new technology in the foreseeable future.
Likewise, solar has definitely come down in price over the past decade or so, to the point where people can actually save money by going solar. Economies of scale deserve part of the credit for this new found fiscal parity with traditional energy sources, as do the aforementioned technological improvements, but federal, state, and local incentives for solar are responsible to a large degree, as well.
And some of those incentives are set to expire in the not-too-distant future. So while the general trend has been toward affordability, solar power could actually become more expensive for consumers. That’s why waiting to adopt solar energy could be a big misstep for cautious consumers. It’s a great time to go solar.
Solar Is High-Maintenance
Some people believe that going solar will require a ton of extra maintenance work, and who needs that? We’re not sure where they got this idea, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, solar panels have no moving parts, and there’s very little that can go wrong with them. Obstructions should be removed, and they should be hosed off every now and then, but other than that, they’re relatively trouble-free.
Solar Panels Are Unsightly
The image factor has held some people back from going solar, but it needn’t be a deal breaker. True, the look of traditional solar panels is well, striking, but there are other options to consider. For staunch traditionalists, solar shingles are an excellent option. They’re low profile, non-reflective, and barely even noticeable. They don’t have the same eco street cred that regular panels do, but some folks aren’t into being flashy.
Solar Panels Will Ruin My Roof
Your potential solar customers may have been told that installing solar panels will damage their roof. In fact, quite the opposite is true. Solar panels actually act as a protective shield. And if repairs are needed, removing the solar panels to access the roof is a relatively simple matter.
